What’s included
3× 120 grit sanding sponges
For scuff-sanding before Cabinet Mud or primer (creates “tooth” for bonding).
3× 180 grit sanding sponges
For leveling Cabinet Mud and smoothing primer before paint.
3× 220 grit sanding sponges
For a light scuff between top coats — smoother finish + better intercoat bond.
Printed “Sanding System” guide
Simple steps, grit usage, and pro tips — so you don’t guess and don’t over-sand.
Why sanding matters (in plain English)
Paint and primer don’t just “stick.” They bond in two ways:
  • Chemical adhesion (how coatings cure together)
  • Mechanical adhesion (how coatings grip tiny scratches in the surface)
Sanding creates that mechanical grip, and sanding between steps levels dust nibs and texture so the finish looks smoother and lasts longer.
How to use this kit (the exact order)
Step 1: Clean before sanding
Never sand over grease or residue. Clean → let dry → sand. (If you sand a dirty surface, you grind contamination in and hurt adhesion.)
Step 2: 120 grit (before Mud or primer)
Light scuff only to dull the finish and create “tooth.” You’re not stripping to bare wood.
Step 3: 180 grit (after Cabinet Mud)
Level the highs. Smooth ridges. Light pressure wins. Avoid over-sanding edges.
Step 4: 180 grit (after primer)
Smooth primer texture and dust nibs before paint. This is a key step for a clean finish.
Step 5: 220 grit (between top coats)
Light scuff between coats to improve intercoat adhesion and smoothness. Don’t sand aggressively.
Ryan Says (Pro Tip)
The order matters: Clean → Sand → Dust Off → Coat
And use light pressure. Most sanding mistakes come from pushing too hard or hitting edges.
FAQ
Do I really need to sand between coats?
Yes. It improves bond between layers and removes dust nibs/texture so your finish feels smoother and looks more professional.
Will this make oak cabinets look like smooth maple?
No. Oak has natural waves in the wood. Cabinet Mud fills the pores and reduces deep grain trenches, but oak will still look like oak — just cleaner and more finished.
What if I accidentally sand through primer or paint?
Spot prime/touch up and keep going. The key is light pressure—especially on corners and edges.
How long will 9 sponges last?
Most projects are covered with this kit if you use light pressure and swap sponges when they load up. Heavy texture or very large kitchens may require a second sanding kit.

Ryan Says

"Most cabinet paint failures come from poor sanding, not bad paint. Use the right grit at the right stage, and your finish will bond better and look smoother."
