When you hire me, you get me.

A lot of painting companies send a salesperson, then a crew, then maybe a manager. That's not how I work.

You've watched my videos for years. I teach the cabinet painting process, slwo the real work, the mistakes, and the details most painters skip.

When you hire me, I'm the one who shows up, does the prep, sprays the finish, and makes sure it's right.

This may not be the fastest option.

It's not the cheapest option.

But it is the right option

This is a good fit if...

  • You want your cabinets painted by the person you're hiring
  • You care about prep, durability & finish quality
  • You want a true cabinet painting specialist
  • You're willing to wait for the right project opening
  • You understand this is a premium level of work

This is NOT a good fit if...

  • You're looking for the lowest possible price
  • You want a rushed, in-and-out repaint
  • You want a large crew to do it as fast as possible
  • You don't want to send photos or details
  • You're comparing only by square footage or door count
  • You're not comfortable with projects commonly $6,000 - $12,000

What cabinet painting projects usually cost

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you do all the work yourself?

Yes. When you hire me, you get me.

I personally handle the cabinet painting work myself. I do not sell the job and then pass it off to a random crew or subcontractor.

That is one of the main reasons I only take select projects. I want the work to be done the way I would want it done in my own home.

Do you use subcontractors?

No. I do not subcontract your cabinet painting project.

This offer is built around hiring me directly — Ryan Cunningham from DIY Painting — to personally complete your cabinet painting project.

Are you insured?

Yes, I carry business insurance.

If your project is a good fit and we move forward, I can provide insurance information as part of the proposal process.

Where are you located?

I am based in Minnesota and regularly work in the Twin Cities area.

I also consider select travel projects when the size, schedule, budget, and logistics make sense.

Do you travel for cabinet painting projects?

Yes, for select projects.

Travel projects need to make sense based on the location, cabinet count, timeline, project complexity, and overall budget. Travel costs may be added depending on the project.

If you are outside Minnesota, you can still apply. Just include your city, state, project photos, and any important timing details.

How much does cabinet painting cost?

Most cabinet painting projects I take on range from $6,000–$12,000.

Some smaller projects may be less, and larger or more detailed projects may be more. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen, cabinet condition, wood type, number of doors and drawers, repairs, colors, built-ins, islands, and whether travel is required.

Why do cabinet painting prices vary so much?

Cabinets are not all the same.

A small smooth maple kitchen is very different from a large oak kitchen with heavy grain, an island in a second color, built-ins in another room, damaged doors, or a previous failed paint job.

The price depends on the amount of prep, repair, masking, spraying, sanding, and detail work needed to get the right result.

Why does oak cost more?

Oak has open grain, which means the wood texture usually shows through paint unless extra prep is done.

If you want a smoother painted finish on oak, it usually requires additional filling, sanding, priming, and detail work. That takes more time and materials, so oak projects are usually priced higher than smoother cabinet types like maple.

Can you make oak cabinets look completely smooth?

Sometimes oak can be made much smoother, but I do not like to promise that oak will look exactly like brand-new factory maple cabinets.

Oak has deep grain, pores, joints, and natural texture. With the right prep and grain filling, the finish can be dramatically improved, but the final result depends on the cabinets and the level of prep included in the project.

I will be honest with you about what is realistic after seeing your cabinets.

Do you paint previously painted cabinets?

Yes, but previously painted cabinets need to be evaluated carefully.

The biggest question is whether the existing paint is bonded well. If the old coating is failing, peeling, gummy, chipping, or poorly prepped, that can add a lot of work.

Send photos and any details you know about what was used before, and I’ll let you know if it looks like a project I can take on.

Do you spray or brush and roll?

Doors and drawer fronts are typically sprayed for a smoother finish.

Cabinet frames may be sprayed or painted on site depending on the project, layout, masking requirements, home setup, and finish goals.

The exact method depends on what will produce the best result for your specific cabinets.

How long does the project take?

Most cabinet painting projects take about a week or more, depending on the size and complexity of the job.

Larger kitchens, oak grain filling, multiple colors, built-ins, repairs, and travel projects can take longer.

Because I personally do the work myself, the schedule may be different than a large crew. The goal is a careful, high-quality process — not simply rushing through the job as fast as possible.

Will my kitchen be usable during the project?

Your kitchen will be disrupted during the project.

Cabinet doors and drawers are removed, areas are protected, and parts of the kitchen may be masked off or unavailable at different times. In many cases, homeowners can still stay in the home, but you should expect limited kitchen access while the work is happening.

I’ll explain what to expect before the project starts.

Do I need to empty my cabinets?

Usually, you do not need to empty every cabinet completely, but some areas may need to be cleared depending on the project.

You may need to clear countertops, remove fragile items, empty drawers, and clear areas where masking, sanding, or painting will happen.

Before the job starts, I’ll give you specific prep instructions.

Do you replace hinges or hardware?

I can usually reinstall existing hinges and hardware, and in some cases new hardware can be installed if it fits properly.

Changing hardware can add extra work if new holes need to be drilled, old holes need to be filled, or the layout changes. If you want new handles, knobs, or hinges, include that in your application.

Can you help with color choices?

Yes. I can give input on cabinet colors and finish direction.

That said, final color selection is ultimately your decision. I can help you think through things like white cabinets, warm neutrals, dark colors, island colors, and how the cabinet color works with your counters, floors, backsplash, and lighting.

Can you paint laminate cabinets?

Usually, but laminate needs to be evaluated carefully.

The success of the project depends on the surface, condition, edges, prior coatings, and whether the right prep and primer system can be used. If you have laminate cabinets, send clear photos and mention that they are laminate or that you are unsure.

Will painted cabinets be as durable as factory cabinets?

A properly painted cabinet finish can be very durable, but it is still a painted finish and should be treated with care.

Factory finishes are often applied in controlled shop environments with industrial systems. A professional cabinet repaint can look excellent and hold up well, but it is not magic. Prep, products, cure time, and how the cabinets are used all matter.

I’ll explain realistic expectations before the project starts.

Will there be smell or fumes?

There can be some odor during cabinet painting, especially during priming, spraying, and drying.

I use professional products and ventilation practices appropriate for the project, but you should still expect some smell and disruption. If you have strong sensitivities, pets, children, or health concerns, mention that before scheduling.
